Disappointment in San Diego

I just got back from a week in San Diego. I was looking forward to 3 days of diving at Wreck Alley and the local kelp beds. I have to say that I was very disappointed on several different levels. First off, all 3 days of diving got cancelled...the dive boat I was booked on (The Marissa) decided they did not have enough paying divers on 2 days and the swells got too big and dangerous on the 3rd. I was able to get on the DND II on 1 day and did 2 local dives; the NOSC Tower and a local kelp bed. I was disappointed with the amount (or lack there of) of sea life. There was a lot of anemone, but that was about it. Finding a variety of fish was difficult. I was lucky to have seen 2 Giribaldi on the kelp bed dive. I’m sure that there are usually a lot more fish and other life around, but the vis was poor and there just was not much to see. I actually ended both dives early from frustration of not seeing a lot of sea life. Normally surface with around 500 psi and surfaced both dives with more that 950 psi. I guess if I go back it may have to be on a weekend and perhaps in the fall or winter...

Yea, that’s just anywhere for you... well, almost anywhere the weather can make a great dive into something less than great. I went to the Yukon last year and the vis was not that great, but once I got onto the ship it was good enough to see some life and all. Got some interesting pics on the ship there, but couldn’t take a pic of the whole ship or anything, just not enough vis.

Sorry about your dis appointment in San Diego. There are just some places where you just about have to live at to get those great picturest dives. I spend a week in San Diego every Feb.. but have never dove there. I dive Lake Mich. and wait for those perfect days to go out for a dive. But I would never plan a vacation dive trip for Lake Mich. cause the conditions are not stable. Thats why I am not diving this weekend. Mike B.

That is to bad Dave....You will have to go again it is usually better than that.... I went out in May and dove the kelp beds and the Yukon...vis was good then and I was able to see tons of life....The Yukon was a fun dive....not real challenging but a bit over 100 ft...a very unique white anemone covers the ship... vis was 10 ft near the surface but at about 40 ft it opened up to over 50+ ft.... not to bad!!!!
