Over the weekend I had the opportunity to train with one of the best instructors in the east. The instructors name is Timmy Young from Dive Tech in Charleston, West Virginia. Timmy is the owner of Dive Tech and Sports which opened in the Spring of 1994 and has been kicking ever since. Timmy began diving in 1989 and became an Open Water Instructor in 1993. Timmy decided to open his own shop and become an instructor when he noticed that there needed to be improvements in the way student are taught how to dive. Timmy believes that each student should be thoroughly trained and self sufficient. One of his favorite sayings when someone calls in for a course to be completed in a weekend is "Your certification is valid for a lifetime, do not rush the certification process".
In 1995 Dive Tech was the first shop in West Virginia to begin teaching and blending Enriched Air/Safe (Nitrox) Air. Timmy has since become an Technical Nitrox Instructor-Trainer, Full Cave Instructor and a Instructor Certifier for Scuba Schools International, Instructor Certifier for TDI/SDI, and Instructor for IANTD. Timmy is the only Cave Instructor in the State of West Virginia and is very active in the cave community, serving as the cave conservation officer and member of the Training Board for NACD and has recently became the Cavern/Cave Administrator for American Nitrox Divers International (ANDI).
When I say this instructor is unbelievable it is just that. He is not one of these instructors that you pay, and you half do the skills and get a certification card. With Mr. Young you will do the skills and do them right. He doesn’t care how long it takes to get a skill down, he will be right by your side coaching you all the way. He believes that everyone learns differently, at different paces. If you aren’t getting something, he will try a different approach till you finally get it.
Mr. Young believes that so many people are being short changed with their training. Some Instructors are trying to get people in and out as quickly as possible. Therefore they aren’t being taught all the things they should be. This instructor is the best of the best, and his prices are really good as well. Timmy is in the top thirty-eight cave instructors in the nation, and is the instructor of instructors. If you are serious about diving, and want to be have the best training possible you need to give Dive Tech a call. I promises you after you take one class with Timmy, you wont want to go anywhere else. I am participating in his Intro into cave class the first weekend of October. It sure to be a fun and exciting class, I hope to see you there.
