Welcome to the vibrant world of nudibranchs
For me nudi-hunting is like collecting stamps... You always want to find new ones for your private collection... I remember the first time someone pointed out a nudibranch to me during a dive, gesturing towards a rock and signalling “Look, something small”. What felt like minutes went by as I squinted and shifted focus trying to figure out what exactly I was trying to look at. Then suddenly a tiny piece of what appeared to be algae moved and I noticed it was actually alive! It couldn’t have been...

The Truth About Nemo – What Disney Pixar Failed to Mention About Clownfish!
Everybody knows what a clownfish is. They dominate reefs and you can see them almost everywhere here on Cabilao Island. These intelligent little anemone fish have become one of the trademarks of the ocean since the release of the widely successful Disney Pixar movie Finding Nemo. The film portrays clown fish as wonderfully adorable, cute, loyal and, well, polite. It’s a family-friendly film, so of course their characters are befitting to that which is suitable for all audiences. However, in real...

Liveaboard Diving Commonly, if you visit a certain place, what tourists usually do is to book a hotel to stay after a long day of escapade. Two days in an underwater cave running out of oxygen
bbc.com/news/magazine-40558067 Two days in an underwater cave running out of oxygen Three months ago, Xisco Gràcia experienced what he describes as every diver’s worst nightmare - he found himself in an underwater cave, relying on an air pocket for survival. As hours turned into days he realised he might not be found in time. On Saturday 15 April, Xisco Gràcia slipped into the water in Mallorca for a routine dive. The geology teacher spent most weekends exploring and mapping the island’s complex...

Brion Sullivan (GypsyDiver) - RIP
Greg - 10/27/2014 6:59 PM
We lost GypsyDiver today. I met Brion through DiveBuddy. We quickly became friends. I had the pleasure of speaking with him a few times over the phone. Every time we spoke, I ended the conversation happier! Each call would include some jokes or interesting conversation that would cause him to laugh, which caused me to laugh. I ran into Brion and his wife, Bree, at a scuba trade show. They were such a cute couple. You can tell that Brion loved her very much. His arm was around her the whole time ...

Deep Down - A Macy Davis Story
Note, this is a story, not informational post! The water was a sort of frothy blue. Whales and dolphins brushed the top of the water like whip cream over a hot coco. It was cold, salty, splashing every which way. Fish swam thickly in the water below and swarms of tuna bumped the side of the boat. Lucy hobbled over to her seat, the boat shaking and her stomach churning. "You okay there, Luce?" Captain Logan called from the wheel. Lucy shook her head, her red curls bouncing along as she sat down. ...

My Mom (Eve) and Biggest DiveBuddy Fan - RIP
My Mom, Eve, passed away two weeks ago today (on June 13th, 2014). For several months she was battling pancreatic cancer. I felt it was important to share this news with my fellow dive buddies as many of you have interacted with my mom since we started this scuba community. My mom was my biggest DiveBuddy fan. She was always on the website. She replied to many of your forum topics. She commented on many of your photos. While she wasn’t a certified scuba diver, she was the best damn surface suppo...

Does The Image of Scuba Diving Reflect Your Style?
What is the image of scuba diving today? Looking at campaigns recruiting the younger generation it reminds me of an old guy putting on “hip” clothes and trying to act like he’s young again with the end result being the people not really wanting to be affiliated with him. Like many sports, and thanks to the “Old Guys’ Club”, diving has historically been gender-biased, reeking of machismo and exclusivity. This attitude towards the sport, which may have been generated by the old school navy origins...

Top 10 Reasons to Scuba Dive... After You’ve Been Dumped!!
In the tourism industry I have the awesome opportunity to meet and chat with people all the time. A lot of these talks are the inspiration for my blogs and one topic that has been pretty interesting to me is the way romantic relationships play a role in scuba diving. Sadly, I’ve heard many people take a long hiatus from diving due to a break-up, but in my opinion, I think scuba diving is the exact remedy a person’s heart needs in order to plow through a traumatic, dramatic, bummer of a break-up....
