GoPro for videos while diving.
Hello all, Im getting started with diving and would like to video my first few dives post training dives. Is there a best setup of equipment? Is there a preferred video/photo taking device that would surpass the GoPro? I understand a hand mount would be better than a mask mount so I can get a better point and shoot. I understand there is some limit to what a GoPro can do and battery life is a problem, but price point wise I feel like this is a better option. Bring on the knowledge!! Thanks...

Underwater Photography with a TG-4
Getting into underwater photography can seem daunting at first - you may visualize a lot of additional gear to lug around, handle during the dive and properly maintain between dives. However, Olympus makes a great series of cameras that allow you to dip your toes into the hobby without overwhelming yourself initially with the price tag or extra gear. One of the latest in the Tough series line, the TG-4, is a compact camera that is waterproof out of the box to 50 feet and rugged to stand up to le...

Tips on Shooting Underwater Pictures and Videos
With so many photo-taking options available today it’s hard not to splurge on opportunities as they come to us. It doesn’t matter whether you have it while eating watermelon while sitting on the back porch at grandma’s or skydiving, it’s always a good idea to capture the moment in pictures. So what do you do when you encounter the opportunity to take a shot while you are underwater? Fortunately, the world is so full of excellent equipment that not only takes good pictures but are specifically de...

Amazing Underwater Creatures I Photographed While Diving In Indonesia
I’m an underwater photographer born in Venezuela and photography is my greatest passion. I have had the chance to dive in wonderful and different places, such as Galapagos, Bahamas, Yucatan Peninsula, Coiba, Bonaire, the Canary Islands and most recently – Indonesia. In the latter I visited the amazing underwater world. For me, Lembeh Strait (Indonesia) is the best place for underwater macro photography in the whole world. The diversity of tiny species from nudibranchs and frog fishes to the most...

If You Can’t Take a Joke Don’t Take Up Underwater Photography
By Bob Halstead Some thoughts on taking underwater photographs with helpful hints for the innocent. It is all very wonderful to see beautiful underwater photographs published in Dive Magazines, but it is about time someone confessed! Some of the younger readers might not understand the suffering and sacrifices necessary to get those images, and end up with entirely the wrong idea. I’ve seen grown men cry. I’ve seen others, in a frenzy of frustration and rage, smashing their cameras and strobes o...

Photoshop
By Bob Halstead “That’s a wonderful picture, you must be an expert at Photoshop”. Is that the ultimate insult to a photographer? It is to me. I like to think of myself as an underwater photographer. My perfect dive would be to descend, absorb the site’s ambience, discover the definitive subject, visualize the image I want, take one perfect photograph, and ascend, breathing the last puff of Nitrox from my tank as I reach for the dive boat ladder. I believe that a photo that comes straight out of ...

Digital Gets The Finger
By Bob Halstead Most of the divers I meet these days are shooting digital cameras. Sometimes they laugh at me, and mock my film cameras, and say things like “I only shot 200 images on that last dive, how many did you shoot Bob?” Then they sit down in the saloon with their computers and call people over to see their best shots. “There is a bit of back scatter in this one but I’ll just remove it with photoshop, how long will it be before you see your shots Bob? Ha! Ha!”. I could take this for a wh...
