Stonington Point - Stonington CT

Loading...
Stonington Point is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located at Water Street, Stonington, CT 06378. This dive site has an average rating of 3.77 out of 5 from 13 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 36-40ft/11-12m. The average visibility is 5-10ft/2-3m.

Easy beach entry. There is a life guard on duty, at least during the summer, and a $5 fee per person, but if you ask nice like "We’re not going to be on the beach at all, we’re just going diving. Do we still have to pay?" The lifeguard may let you pass without paying.

It’s an educational dive. There’s loads of sea grass and in late August tons of jellyfish too. There’s skate and flounder and a brown fish with a mohawk whose name I didn’t know. It could have been Bubba.

My dive buddy says it’s a great night dive, but I haven’t been yet, so I can’t confirm.

There’s a picnic table and a port-o-potty on site seasonally. But if you’re fastidious, and I am, you can walk back up the street a ways to a local inn or restaurant to use their facilities. Directions can be found at the website: http://www.lisrc.uconn.edu/coastalaccess/site.asp?siteid=628

I went scuba diving here on 7/7/2024. Average viz: Under 5ft/2m. Water temp: 61-65°F/16-18°C.
Very foggy day so stayed closer to shore because any boaters wouldn’t see my flag until they we’re on top of me. Lots of small life to see, easy entry, fun dive.

The water temp was not bad. It was a nice day. However, there was no visibility. Might try again.

A great beach. Visibility is usually anywhere from 4-10 feet, and may be upwards of 12 feet depending on the season, tides, etc. Easy walk-in entry. Water temps can reach into the low-to-mind 70’s during summer, but can dip into the 40’s during the winter months.

Dove this site on 5/27/13. Entered just to the left of the "beach". Entry was average shore dive entry. Lots of things to see. Baby bass, skates, cool crabs...lots of vegetation. Not very deep...20ft ish...viz was about 10-12ft.

Def dive this again if in the area.

Went yesterday - vis was ok 10-12. Not much to see yet, some small bait fish. No charge for the beach - yet.

If you enter via the rocks around the monument, you can avoid the beach/charge altogether. This is a tad treacherous, but you are immediately immersed in wildlife, lots of fish species including quite a few black sea bass.
