A favourite site of many of Bermuda’s divers and dive staff. The fringing reef on the south side of Bermuda is a series of breakers. At Smuggler’s Notch, these breakers are very close together, creating caves, tunnels and swim-through’s. Historically, this area was used by smuggler’s, who would hide their contraband in the many caves to be collected at a later date. No treasure remains, but often the local dive instructors can be found trying to map out new routes. Or just trying to find their way out of the maze of tunnels!!!!

Divemaster Notes:
Located between the Southampton Princess Hotel and The Sonesta Beach Hotel, with a depth range from 20ft to 50ft. The massive selection of Anemone’s to be found here will make any Caribbean resort jealous. An amazingly diverse selection of colours and sizes unheard of south of Bermuda.

Schools of Snapper, Blue, Queen and Townsend Angel Fish, (which are unique to Bermuda), can be found here. The tunnels and overhangs providing cover for Glass eyed Sweepers and Lobsters.

The shallows are coated with masses of Purple Sea fans, home to many Flamingo Tongues. Watch out for the Trumpet Fish hiding on the backs of Groupers. Many Golden Chain and Spotted Eels are also relatively easy to be found.

Photographers with macro sets will want to come here again and again, as will those without cameras. The complex nature of this site is such that a guided tour is almost essential.

REMEMBER.... THE REEF IS FRAGILE! PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH OR TREAD ON LIVING CORAL.
