Thurmond Lake and Dam is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in Clarkes Hill, SC. This dive site has an average rating of 3.67 out of 5 from 9 scuba divers. The maximum depth is over 150ft/46m. The average visibility is 11-15ft/3-5m.

Thurmond Lake and Dam (formerly known as Clarks Hill Reservoir) lies north of Augusta, GA on the South Carolina/Georgia state border. It is created by a dam on the Savannah River. The lake is easily accessible for a day dive within 2.5 hours of Atlanta or Columbia. The best place to dive from is the Visitor Center on the South Carolina side of the dam. From here there are a few items sunk in the lake including a small airplane that lies in 30-35 feet of water just off of the rock dam. It lies tangent to the rocks between the 3rd and 4th light poles on the dam. Keep the rocks from the dam to your left as you swim from shore of the Visitor Center beach. There are a few drop offs as well, and depth enters 180 feet around the concrete part of the dam.

chris31101 - 12/30/2015 1:00 AM I went scuba diving here on 8/9/2015. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: 61-65°F/16-18°C. Lake level 327’, sum precip 1.3" (1-8 Aug), air temp 84, sunny. Entered from the shore at the visitor’s center. No flow and disturbing the bottom caused the water to become silted/cloudy for a while. Saw lots of brim/panfish near the rocks (5-10’), who followed us to the plane (~35’). Water was warm down to the thermocline (~45’), where I immediately realized I should’ve worn my gloves. Looking up from under the thermocline was like being under a brownish cloud of smoke, visibility improved some but very little light penetrated below. Continued our decent through the cold darkness to "the (rock) wall" (~80’). Not much to see at depth, but a cool eery experience. Next time bring gloves for deep dive and chopped lunch meat for fish.
