Apo island, Philippines is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Apo Island, Negros Oriental, Philippines. This dive site has an average rating of 4.27 out of 5 from 11 scuba divers. This dive site provides bathrooms and airfills.
Apo Island is located just off the southeastern tip of the island of Negros, 30 km south of the Negros Oriental Capitol of Dumaguete.
The island is only 3 km in diameter and 120 m at it’s highest point, where a light house stands. There is a white stone beach, 250 m long, and an unusually vibrant coral reef, which has been protected as a fish sanctuary since 1982 offering extraordinary diving and snorkeling.
There are about 800 residents living on the Island. Liberty’s Lodge provides
accommodations for visitors. There are 14 rooms and a restaurant serving good European and Filipino meals.
The other parts of Apo Island have rocky beaches which are a resource for all kinds of large fish species. There is a hiking trail to the lighthouse on the top of the island where you can see a variety of fruit trees. There is no motorized traffic like cars or motorbikes found on the Island.
APO is an outstanding place for those looking to dive or snorkel. It is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 dive sites in the world. However, it is probably not for those looking for night life and bars. Apo is more of an experience to be lived rather than a destination to be checked off a list of places to go. Electricity is available from 6-9 PM, mainly for use of diving compressors, but it gives you time to charge your cell phones and IPODS, but then the island turns into a quite place for sleeping. Obviously we have no air conditioning, but we do have a fresh ocean breeze. Water is very precious and has to be imported from the mainland. We kindly ask that you be very careful in your use of it.
We do not compete with places who offer all the comfort you can think of because if we did we would destroy our marine life and one more dive paradise would be gone. Here you can learn to get along with a simplified life and maybe realize how much you waste at home.
Fresh food is not a problem. We import food every day from Dumaguete City.
We protect our marine life, so we can provide fresh seafood without depleting the areas resources as has happened in the past. We live in harmony with the ocean, and do not destroy it. Therefore, you will see a rich world of underwater species.
