Calheta do Lagador is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Biscoitos, Terceira Azores, Portugal. This dive site has an average rating of 4.00 out of 5 from 1 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 36-40ft/11-12m. The average visibility is 51-60ft/16-18m.
At Biscoitos, an old whaling village on the north coast of the Terceira
Island. This area is made of basalt rock crevices above the sea, being
one of the most famous resort of the island. The dive is carried out
from the coast, from a platform of cement created in Calheta to serve as
a swimming area. This site is somewhat sheltered and shallow, having low currents. Occasionally, as the cove is exposed to open ocean you
may need to pay attention to surf.
The initial descent is made from the first bay along the coast, until 15
feet depth. The bottom of this bay is formed by small pebble, large
blocks of rock which form canyons and crevices. At 33 feet, you can
turn towards the Bais das Pombas or turn North and head out to open sea.
After leaving the bay, the maximum dive depth is 40 feet. The exit should be south back to the original point of entry.
Many species in the juvenile phase live here in the bottom. Among the
rocks and seaweed there are seabreams, parrotfish and a juvenile
groupers, schoals of small axillary seabreams and
yellow mouth barracudas and several octopus. Although it is of low depth
you can see schoals of amberjacks, yellow mouth barracudas and bogue.
