Deadman’s Reef - Laguna CA

Loading...
Deadman’s Reef is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Laguna, CA. This dive site has an average rating of 4.11 out of 5 from 9 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 51-60ft/16-18m. The average visibility is 21-25ft/6-8m.

A very long and arduous swim about 1/4 mile to reef but very well worth it. The reef is a diverse experience of small pinnacles, mini-walls, crevices and cracks. It starts on eastern end in sand at about 47 feet and is visible at points as little as 15 feet from the surface. The visibility averages 15-20 ft and typically much better since it is deeper and exposed to the currents.

This reef has the most diversity and quantity of fish around it probably due to its distance from shore and from fisherman and divers.

More detailed description of this reef: http//www.cadivingnews.com -
"The amount and variety of marine life you will find is equally remarkable. There is no kelp but encrusted on the rocks are a variety of colorful algae, bryozonan, and blotches of lavender and pink corynactis anemones. In the cracks and under overhangs are rock scallops (look but do not touch as they are protected here). Toward the tops of the reef the growth of mussels and barnacles are thick. With the mussels come their primary predator, large colorful ochre and giant-spined stars. This is an excellent spot to find nudibranchs. Keep an eye out for numerous Spanish shawls, as well as an occasional dorid or Hilton’s aeolid. Other invertebrates to be found on this reef include octopus, sea hares, a few small lobster, and green anemones. "

This site may is commonly missed - navigate 210 from the stairs at Crescent and then line up the two Seal Rock with gray house on the cliff.
When drop down should be in about 45 ft of water.
Be careful about the strong currents and plan to try and swim back to shore going East and then North East shallower into bay to avoid the long surface swim back.

5 stars because the quality is amazing considering it’s a beach dive on mainland California.

I went scuba diving here on 5/27/2012. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: 61-65°F/16-18°C.
Conditions looked promising for Deadmans, calm swell, no surf, warm day even tried side mount shore dive with steels (bad idea), but despite easy entry, very long swim we had very poor visibility and strong currents on surface going away from deadmans and bottom going past deadmans. We also had a brief encounter with a speeding yacht reminder to always carry a surface buoy and use it! Our friend Idad got some great pictures with his camera and Vicente had the longest swim of his life. Get out and dive with us. NBTT Divers (http://www.nbttdiveclub.com)

I went scuba diving here on 5/13/2012. Average viz: 21-25ft/6-8m. Water temp: 66-70°F/19-21°C.
Early Mothers day dive at Crescent. It was a overcast day, ankle slappers entry/exit,some current but otherwise easy kick out to deadmans. It was my first side mount dive trial. It went pretty well as I will make some additional modifications to bands and console placement. The viz was pretty good and the water was VERY WARM. My computer actually registered a high of 68 at some point. There was a big thermocline on back of the reef. Another great dive with NBTT Divers. Get out and dive with us!. I went scuba diving here on 5/6/2012. Average viz: 16-20ft/5-6m. Water temp: 61-65°F/16-18°C.
Finally got back in the water overdue after a few weeks and surprisingly the visibility was pretty good. We had a new diver join us (Bob). With Bob’s already extensive experience in shore diving we decided to shoot for deadmans. We had to time the entry a bit and locating the reef was tricky with the exaggerated high tide and some significant current even though we followed the kelp down we were off about 25 feet but went deeper and found it. Ran into mating crabs, octo, and many good size fish no doubt thanks to the effect of the MPA. The water has also warmed up quite a bit as high as 64. Good kick off to the start of the summer diving season with the guys from NBTT (Get out and dive with us!) http://www.nbttdiveclub.com

It was the 2nd Annual NBTT Family Beach Day, we had about 12 divers total we split the group, one went to the reef in front of seal rock and other went to Deadmans. Excellent visibility and lots of life, some video of Javy feeding a moray eel and ran into a guitarfish on way back in. Another great dive with NBTT. Dive with NBTT -
