Pompano Beach is betting divers will like its newest artificial reef – The Newtown Creek is a 324’ sludge tanker that was decommissioned by the City of New York and sold to Shipwreck Park Pompano Beach staged to look like a casino and renamed Lady Luck.
Prominent Pompano Beach artist Dennis MacDonald is creating a mock underwater casino, complete with poker tables, roulette tables and slot machines on the main deck.
You won’t be able to gamble, but you will be able to sit 50 feet underwater at a poker table and admire changing waterproof art exhibits and any random sea life that comes swimming by.
And who wouldn’t want to get a selfie in scuba gear, standing by a roulette wheel as schools of fish swim?
"Nothing on a ship of this magnitude with this kind of interactive art exists anywhere else," said Tom DiGiorgio, a Pompano businessman who heads up the city’s Economic Development Council.
