Salt Pier - Bonaire

Loading...
Salt Pier is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Bonaire, Bonaire. This dive site has an average rating of 4.81 out of 5 from 16 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 131-140ft/40-43m. The average visibility is 91-100ft/28-30m.

The Salt Pier is one of the most spectacular dives. The pilings harbor some interesting growth that you won’t find easily elsewhere. Since you will need permission from the Cargill Salt Company, make plans early with your local dive shop to schedule this dive.

June 2010 - The salt pier is closed to all diving. We tried several times to get permission.

I went scuba diving here on 6/20/2024. Average viz: 51-60ft/16-18m. Water temp: 81-85°F/27-29°C.
Fascinating dive. Lots of varied sea life under the pier with large schools of fish. One of my favorites during our stay on Bonaire.

Fantastic dive - Did you execute as a shore or boat dive?

Great site. Octopus, seahorses, rays, tarpon. Large schools of fishes. More abundance and variety of sea life than we saw anywhere else on the island. Only open for diving when there’s no ship in port, and ships for days once docked. If you get the opportunity this is a must see site.

We were in Bonaire in Aug 2015 and the Salt Pier is now open unless their is a ship at the pier. Or vis was about 60 feet . The pilings are heavily encrusted and have numerous Sargent Major nest guarded by the males. Barracuda and tarpon are frequent visitors and octopus and eels are often sighted. On the sand flats alongside the pier shoals of squid are also normally encountered. For squid swim slowly to where you first sighted them and then just stop and wait. They will normally return to check you out and often come within a few feet. This is one of the premier dives of Bonaire but if their is a ship at the pier try the pilings near Windsock for at least a similar dive. The pier makes a good second dive after visiting the Helma Hooker. See images for squid and eel from this site

This pier is an awesome dive, entry and exit is simple. The local maps say you need permission to dive here, but the local Cargill worker said it was OK as long as there was not a ship at the pier. A lot of life around the pylons, huge schools of grunts. Sea turtles, Spotted Eagle Rays, Octopus, and at least 5 species of eel! This dive is a must if you are in Bonaire.

Large tarpoon, barracudas, pier pillars covered with colorful sponges and corrals. Some garbage around, like old tires , pipes. But interesting site.
