Rum Runner aka Rhum Runner is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in Grenada. The maximum depth is 101-110ft/31-34m. The average visibility is 61-70ft/19-21m.
A few miles off the south-west coast at a depth of 32m lies a little shipwreck of a former Rum Runner. Rum Runners are very famous on Grenada, you hop on board, cruise around a little, visit some nice beaches or other points of interest and – most of all – listen to Caribbean music and drink as many rum punch as you can manage. Whether or not that played a role in the sinking of the boat, we don’t know.
The wreck itself isn’t necessarily the most interesting part of the dive, though it’s nicely covered with sponges, soft corals and is always surrounded by two beautiful french angelfish. A lot more exciting is the entirely healthy reef rising close by from 30m to 16m. As there’s nearly always a slight or moderate current running over the reef you can be sure to spot plenty of reef fish: colorful creole wrasse, trumpet fish, different kinds of moray eels, lobsters and much more. Nurse sharks and eagle rays are certainly not common but have been spotted on several occasions.
You’ll begin your dive by a free descent though the blue to a depth of 30m to 32m. In general we’ll spend around 10 minutes around the wreck before we slowly ascent to a shallower depth while swimming at the edge of the reef and working our way up to the reef top. Due to its depth, the dive time usually doesn’t exceed 40 minutes but certainly a great 40 minutes. Obviously the bottom time could be increased by using nitrox, enough gas permitting.
