A total Marine Reserve and Nature Reserve - and pending World Heritage Site - the 11 million year old Islands’ volcanic origins provide myriad spectacular drop offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels. There is a huge variety of fish and wild life.
During summer vast numbers of stingray gather in archways to mate, the volcanic structures providing protection by confusing the radar of predatory orca.
Poor Knights is a well know marine reserve in New Zealand and a polular destination for divers. Established in 1981 and no take was in place even before the legislation had come into being. 1890ha. Exposed islands with spectacular underwater scenery including steep rock walls, archways and caves, kelp forest, a mixture of subtropical and warm termpreate fish and invertebrates.
Round the corner is the Waikato a Wreck dive.
