Cow and Calf rocks, St. Thomas is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands (U.S.). The maximum depth is 51-60ft/16-18m. The average visibility is over 150ft/46m.
Two large rocks break the surface south of St. Thomas’ East End. To sailors passing by many years ago, they resembled whales breaching — a cow and a calf.
Current can be tricky at times, but this is a splendorous dive. Small chasms in the reef, teeming with life, twist in every direction. Ledges and swim-throughs add to the appeal. Viz was excellent when I was there (Nov. 2011), and the water was warm enough that a wetsuit wasn’t necessary.
Lobsters were abundant, but quite nervous when we approached, scurrying into their holes or whatever other cover they could find long before we were within arm’s reach.
If you enjoy reef dives, and have to pick just one dive site on St. Thomas, I recommend this one.
