Spectacular dive inside a giant hole in the center of an atoll. Dropping down past 100 feet presents beautiful stalactites and other formations.
Famous landmark - Lighthouse Atoll, Belize. Huge underwater cavern with collapsed ceiling. Deep dive 100-150ft - swim thru stalagtites. Must descend thru reef sharks at about 60-80 ft. Not a lot of fish at depth, but cathedral like cave stuctures around perimiter. Bottom is at around 300+ ft. Must take boat (3+ hours from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye or 1 hour if staying on Turneff Atoll) to site. Surface interval at Lighthouse Caye with Red Footed Booby bird preserve. Very scenic. Most dive operators run weekly trips to the Blue Hole.
Once an above ground cave that has collapsed this spectacular deep blue circle is 1,000 feet in diameter and over 400 feet deep. The Blue Hole is located at Lighthouse Reef, which is one of Belize’s three coral atolls.
Visibility when first entering the water is not that great and the water has a gray color to it but once you have dscended past the thermocline at 50 or 60 ft the water clarity will improve dramatically. This dive is not about the fish and coral formations you are used to seeing it is the stalactites you are going to see. Once you reach the 100 ft mark you will entire the first under cut where you begin swimming between these formations. Even though the water is clear
light is limited so for the best experience bring a dive light, this will help you spot the invertebrates and sponges that live here.
Often times if you look below you will spot sharks swimming in the hole which is probable the only fish you will see in side the Blue Hole. The reef around the edge of the hole has some coral growth and sea life but nothing compared to the reefs on the outer edge of the atoll because the water flow here limited.
