Check out Paint.net. It`s free and pretty good. Otherwise, if you want to spend some money, Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard for image editing.

I agree with Greg as far as buying a program, Photoshop has been a "fun" program for my projects.

I use photoshop. If you want to start off with something less expensive and easier then get photoshop elements.

I use Photoshop CS2 but am finding that the printer is just as important as the software if your planning on outputting your images to paper. I have an EPSON that ignores the color management profile. Contacted Adobe and it looks like only option is to upgrade to CS3. They`re indicating a bug with EPSON but then they are providing the fix in CS3.

I use PS CS3 and it works well. There is a pretty good book, "Adobe Photoshop for Underwate Photographers" that really goes into all of the uses, color corrections, backscatter fixes, etc. ISBN 1584281898 I am off to Wakatobi in March and April for an 18 day photography amd videography jam, so I am looking forward to learning more there.
