HONOLULU, Oahu (21 Sep 2008) — A popular DJ died after a diving accident off Turtle Bay resort in Oahu.
Wayne Richards, 54, was snorkeling with his wife, daughter and son-in-law last Saturday when he dived under the surface but never came back up.
Bystanders helped the family pull Richards ashore where they started CPR and called for help.
Paramedics rushed Richards to hospital where he was placed on life support in critical condition.
Surrounded by his family on Sunday evening, doctors removed life support and Richards was pronounced dead.
In addition to working for decades as a DJ, Richards was operations manager and program director at KLCE and was the voice of different events in Eastern Idaho.
"We’re all going to miss him, the community will miss him, it’s a horrible loss and we’re not prepared to let him go," said colleague Frank Vandersloot.
"I think when you listen to someone on the radio you learn enough about them that you feel like you know them. You heard (Richards) express himself and his ideas and you feel like you get to know him; it feels like somebody you knew personally passed away," said KLCE listener Carolyn Zabriski |
