Bula, going from Ohio to Fiji is too much of a temperature change, you should forward your tickets to us :)

They are the friendliest people you will ever meet which is amazing because not to long ago they were head hunters. Something to keep in mind when dealing with the staff :)

The islands are still tribal, some resorts which have hired from different islands and the staff will become their own tribe and one will be their chief. Your resort may ask you to bring gifts for the children but they’ll probably go to the chief first who then hands them out. Crayons are good, we had a bucket for used but not dead yet batteries. They were given to the chief for flashlights and radios.

Never pat a child on the head! When you are sitting on the mat even wearing shorts under your dress, yes you will wear a dress, your crotch shouldn’t be facing the chief!

There will be a Kava ceremony either at the resort or in a village. It’s more of a drug like Prozak than a drink, in the short term your lips will go numb, long term, more than you’ll be staying there it will kill your liver. It’s bad manners to turn it down but you can request a "low tide" and keep your head :)

One of the things we were warned about is don’t over praise something they own or even things in their garden because they will give it to you.

If you play an unplugged instrument you might want to take it with you, I think everyone in Fiji sings and plays something, at night we would sit out under the stars and listen or sing along. Enjoy!
