Here are 14 Lionfish shot and cooked in white wine by DB’s own JupiterMermaid. It’s a tasty white meat much like tilapia but with more bones

I have never had lion fish put hear it’s real good. One trick I learn when you shot 1 carry some ER scissors (w/out points) & cut off the poisonouis spins to keep from getting a painful sting. With all the spins cut off you can just throw it in a bag & continue your hunt with no worries. Good luck, hope everyone that dives the Gulf or Atlantic is perpared to kill this invasive fish. Everyone let’s go get’em!! Dive On Jason

As a note guys, Florida fish and wildlife will shake you hand if they find 100 of these on your boat.
They are completely unrestricted on hunting and are encouraged to be killed even if you don’t keep them.
This last year on my yearly lobster trip to the keys I killed about 40 myself.

Even if you don’t wan’t to eat them yourselves, once they have been speared and sheared Grouper, Morays and sharks will take them altough teaching sharks to come to divers for food is a bad idea. Something like giving money to teenagers, they just keep coming back for more :(

Latitude,
I hear tales of lion fish in Jersey waters but haven’t seen a single one.
How far north have you found them?

In late summer and into the fall tropicals including Lionfish get swept north and spit out by the Gulf Stream. I’ve seen divers reporting Lionfish in Rhode Island but thankfully they won’t make it thru winter. If we don’t get some east wind soon they won’t make it thru summer, the surface temps off NJ this week are 57 degrees!

Guess I wont be taking any boat trips any time soon. I’m diving wet and wont be doing that with 57 surface temps. Well there’s always Dutch Springs and I can dive that in a dive skin above 30’ once August hits.
