I have been taught for the last 25 years never dive solo. back in may I did a solo dive trip to bonaire. before I went I checked out the resort, and many people when I got there. I was looking for a buddy on my first day of diving. the house reef is 50ft in front of the resort. They encourage solo diving. I did solo dives but never was comfortable. I saw lots of divers doing it.It just dident feel safe.

I find myself solo diving more often than not lately. The few times I’ve dove with a "dive buddy" that I’ve met on a boat, I end up waiting for them to prepare to enter the water, hold up while they bob up and down because they miscalculated their weight, can’t equalize, grope along the bottom destroying the viz. When we finally end the dive, it starts all over again... shoot to the surface, blow their safety stop, struggle to get on the boat. I dive with redundant gear and prepare for a solo dive most times now, unless I have a dive buddy I’ve been with before and know their style and qualifications.

I’ve never done solo diving, but I’m considering it more and more as my dive buddy keeps backing out on me. If I do decide to start going solo, it would definitely be at a site that I already know, I wouldn’t go far and I wouldn’t go deep. I’d stay in the shallow end of the pool until I started getting comfortable enough to expand. After all, my only real purpose for solo diving would be to maintain my skills when there was no one else to dive with.

Solo diving is something that you should take very seriously. Here at Brunswick / Tricity Scuba we offer a Solo Diving course that will open your eyes to the things that you should plan for should you choose to undertake this. As an instructor I find that with students I have used or considered many of the precautions learned in the solo course. These things include a more comprehensive gas management plan, redundant gas supply, entanglement contingencies, loss or a mask or broken strap, predive planning, and many other items.
Having been in places like Cooper River I will also state that in these conditions, even with a dive buddy your solo diving and all the above need to be considered. I will also say that as a underwater photographer, unless you have a patient dive buddy it can be better for all if I go alone. Sitting in one spot for 10 or 15 min for conditions to be just right for a shot is not something that others may cater to.
Whatever you choose consider the solo course from an instructor that you’re comfortable with as a way to make you a better diver. Remember however that diving with a buddy will always make your dives more enjoyable.

It is weird. I was in Bonaire and had a hard time finding someone to dive with too. Don’t know what it is. I guess they think that they don’t know you so they can’t trust you or something. So I went on a couple boat dives, which you really don’t need to do in Bonaire, but I got to know people on the boat and they got to see that I knew what I was doing and we went diving together after that.

Dive how ever you feel comfortable ...

Yeah, I was trained to never dive alone...then working on my Dive Master I’m told to dive out by myself and set a buoy for students or hide an object for the search and recovery specialty...not a big deal...if I’m not back in 10 min somebody is coming out after me...
My issue is I am scared of the water, heights, tight places, the dark, and many other things. I Scuba Dive to get over my fear of water, dive wrecks, etc for the tight spaces and the dark and I sky dive for heights...when "solo diving" my heart races and I have issues, which so far I have overcome to avoid panicking; however, I am not comfortable alone underwater and prefer a dive buddy....so long story short I concur with the "dive within your comfort level, training, experience, and current preparedness."

I solo dive my self.
Don’t worry you will love it after about 80 dives.

Solo diving is the best for me.. I relax and can enjoy my dive without the stress of being responsible for someone else.. I can take my time and do my thing.. For me its just a walk threw the park.. Solo diving is safer then walking across the street for me..But may be very dangerous for others.. But its up to the individual diver.. Its a personnel decision.. Don’t ever let anyone tell you what is safe or not at a dive site..

I solo dive all the time too! It’s very peaceful! Can just enjoy my surrounds and not worry about keeping track of a buddy. I do keep shallow, never go below 40 feet. I stay pretty close to shore too!
