I did my navigation dive in nice clear waters too Ray...mine was in the while diving the sandy void of the Straits of Tiran in Egypt. So even though I had the visibility going for me, I had to find my way back to the boat via compass with no visual markers. I did find a beautiful comb shell in the sand, divemaster had never seen one in such pristine condition there before...I might have gotten bonus points for that. We did leave it in the sand as it did have a snail inside.

You’re right, I’ve done a fair amount of diving in UK waters, and navigation in the clear waters around here is a lot easier! We do try to make things a little bit more challenging though: halfway through the navigation dive when we’ve just completed a 20 minute dive going away from the boat, the instructor suffers a terrible case of sudden amnesia, and the students have to find their way back to the boat using natural navigation - that’s always good fun!

Navigation in clear water, that doesn’t seem to be much of a challenge.
