Seconds to No Air - Free Flow and Hose Failure

Interesting results. Please explain why a high pressure hose failure takes so much longer to empty the tank. It seems counter intuitive unless flow is regulated since the high pressure port is not expected to supply much volume (to a pressure gauge). How long would it take to empty a tank without any regulator attached?

High pressure ports are much smaller than low pressure ports, so a lower volume of air escapes in the same time period.

Thanks - makes sense.

The thing I don’t like about posts like this is it scares people who are new to diving. Have good equipment and dive with a buddy and you won’t have to worry about this.

I agree to a point, it should create respect not fear, and knowledge is power!

As a "NEW DIVER" I can assure you this doesn’t scare me... but it does give me a real life scenario of things I should always be aware of. No matter what we do in life something unexpected can go very wrong whether it’s driving, walking, biking, swimming, anything. Just because something may scare people doesn’t mean we should avoid talking about it, it’s the exact opposite. I saw the Article and Video of David Shaw’s last moment’s, was a real eye opener of the dangers that we can face. But knowledge is power, and a keen awareness of the dangers and risks involved are priceless. If it were me I would show that video at the end of every class... and explain that you have to respect the hobby and always be aware... cause even the best divers, make mistakes. Be safe and Be Aware.

Definitely something to think about. And as mentioned, a pony bottle is a great investment.

Good chart. Another reason to stay shallower if possible.

guess that pony bottle isn’t such a nuisance after all?
