Might have to travel pretty far to dive. Not sure what the diving is like in Alberta. I’m in Kingston Ontario. Not a lot of Canadians on here. West coast would be good diving.

I live in Calgary, we dive Minawanka and forget me not pond, near my house. COLD but it keeps us wet. If you want to go for a dive, let me know. Do end up travelling a great deal to dive somewhere warm.

I’m not in Canada and the New Jersey Ocean is not a place I would invite anyone to dive. But while the topic of warm water has be broached let me offer this. Sandals and their sister resorts Beaches are great low stress Caribbean diving destination. While some people complain that their dives are "too conservative" I truly enjoy being there. They are all inclusive resorts and you can do two to three dives per day at no cost, and some additional pay-for dives such as night and shark dives at certain resorts. All the gear is included, but much of it seems a little to beat up for my liking, I always travel with my own equipment. Some of the tanks have short fills on them so I throw my regs up as soon as possible to make sure I get at least 3000 PSI. If I find I short fill I push it aside and pick a different tank. Beaches even offers BFF deal for woman vacationing together. I especially enjoyed Sandals Grand Bahamas, they have a small offshore island there where you can pass the afternoon snorkeling a small rock reef behind the island.Take you own mask, snorkel and fin as I am not sure that they will lend you gear for free lancing.

P.S.
You can even do your advanced certification at Sandals. The do NOT offer Nitrox for diving or training

Hey John, "I’m not in Canada and the New Jersey Ocean is not a place I would invite anyone to dive." Didn’t you know that New Jersey IS Canada’s beach! Go to Ocean City and everywhere you’ll see the maple leaf waving and look at the plates on the GSP :)
We have some inlet dives suitable for a newbie, the offshore stuff is a bit rough and deep for her now.
