I’m sure you’ll get some great replies to this question soon. I just wanted to point out that SunsetHouse is a member of DiveBuddy. Keith is the guy that manages their profile on DiveBuddy. I would suggest that you tell Keith you’re going and see if he has any suggestions. I’ve met him personally and he’s a great guy. You will have a wonderful time there.

I recently stayed at Sunset house. The mermaid is right there!. Its a very nice easy dive.
I liked Big sand chute dive. you see a rather large sand chute separating 2 reefs. it was very beautiful.
I got to see a hammerhead shark as i was going my safety stop. He was at around 50-60 feet! that was the highlight of my trip.
regarding transportation im not sure what to tell you. if you want to venture either hook up with someone , or rent a car or a bike. a 2 taxi minute ride will be 10 dollars, the 5-6 minute ride to the airport is about 17-18 dollars.
for nice dinning ( which i always like to do when i travel) go to the wharf or great old house. they are expensive though (70-90 per person).
sunset house is nice and relaxing. i would go back there.

I actually just got back from my cruise there. The whole island is great to dive on. Stingray city is a great little side trip to dive at. The walls around the island are all great to go on as well. There are to many dive shops and charters to list.

Sunset’s house reef can look a bit wave battered near shore but we spent hours watching the squid there, off to the left of the entry is a pile of chain, see if the octipus is home. Between the wreck and the mermaid there is plenty to see.
The food is good at Sunset but my dive buddy and I enjoy long walks so some afternoons we would walk out, hang a left, and walk into town. There is a bar with a deck overlooking the water that had the greatest fish sandwiches, the beach next door was where the local fishermen beached their boats so the fish was fresh.
A little farther down that road is a bar that feeds the tarpoon everynight.
Have a good trip

As soon as you walk out the airport door take a left and coss the street and you will see the car rental , tell them that you have ins. with your credit card (make sure before you leave) otherwise that will be a extra 200.00 when you turn it back in. never used sunset, always went to Ocean Frontiers more peaceful at the other end! I don’t think that there is a bad dive site in the hole Caymans! If you never been to Sting Ray city go there atleast once, but make sure you clean your Oring on your Camera housing after you have went before you dive again the silt and sand is bad afterwards you will have a riot Enjoy

My first trip to Sunset House caused me to purchase a condo on the Island. Trust everyone, avoid nothing. It’s that kind of place.
Seek out Mike Pinnington, Dive Ops Manager at Sunset House. Super guy and always eager to offer info on just about any question you have about Sunset House, local shore diving spots and the Island in general.
Check out Thrifty Car Rental, ask for heylegirl. Mention her "#30 Tod Bodine race truck model" and tell her Gus said hello. She will HOOK YOU UP!
You can’t go wrong in Cayman.

My wife and I are heading to Grand Cayman May 29th through June 7th. Fifth time there, lots of good places to eat but not always cheap. Chicken Chicken is good not too expensive Lone Star is fun Hammerheads down in Georgetown good time. We are from Iowa and last time there met a guy working for theCayman island planning and zoning commitee also from Iowa. If you want an EXCELLENT dining experience Restorante Pappagallo’s clear out past west bay out quite pricey however well worth the time. We stay at the Grand Caymanian on the north sound. Off the beaten path very quiet but still close enough to all the action.

I think Hammerheads is the place I was talking about for fish sandwichs

These are just the kind of tips i was looking for. I will check out the car rentals and for sure double check that chain pile for an ocotopus!!!! I know we have a few wall dives planned and the sand chute was one of the dives suggested to me by our local shop owner too........I have noticed that most of the boat diving seems to be relativly close to shore....Is that fairly normal there????? If that is indeed the case I may forgo to motion sickness meds for a not so groggy dive! Again thanks for all the info!!
NO WORRIES!!!

The diving is near shore because off the wall is the Cayman trench, you’ll need more than a deep diver cert for that :)
Speaking of sites, from Sunset House we did Blackies Hole, it’s a site that had been closed for a time and it almost reminded me of the bommies in Fiji and was covered with small fish

Not sure if you have been yet. I went and stayed at the east end last june. Great diving. If you have not been be sure to go to the Cracked Conch resturant near the turtle farm. Eat conch and turtle both were very good.
