"Aliwal Shoal is made up of a long, wide reef with a varied and rugged topography. The rocky surface is cluttered with algae, sponges, soft and hard corals, anemones, and feather stars. Reef fish and pelagics are abundant, turtles are regulars, there are dolphins, whales, manta rays and other large creatures, and even the rare sighting of a sailfish or marlin. Then there are the sharks: raggies, hammerheads, whale sharks, and for some added excitement, blacktips, great whites, Zambezi (bull sharks) and tiger sharks, to name a few. Tiny pineapplefish, paperfish, nudibranchs and other small creatures add to the list. And if the visual overload is not sufficient, all of this is often accompanied by a enchanting underwater soundtrack provided by dolphin whistles and whale songs."
