I’ve come across a dive club that was run by pecking order, do their best to hurt the environment, and do not understand the concept of proper buoyancy (as observed by their pictures). God forbid that you make useful suggestions or make a joke with them. And I think it is funny how people brag how many dives they have, but yet they are the first ones who have the worst habits.

Bottom line: Don’t brag and try not to destroy our reefs—let the later generations enjoy the ocean too. So what are you waiting for—Let’s dive. :)

When I put my stats into the weight calculator I find it overestimates the amount of weight I need by 2-6 lbs, depending on the tank and exposure suit. And I’m average body composition or slightly flabby.

I think that you can alter the calculator slightly by adding a lean, medium, and overweight drop down menu. In order to get myself neutrally buoyant, I’d estimate 5 to 6% of my weight with my current set-up (this is not including the cylinder).

Greg, I appreciate your response. Typically, I wear a 7mm wetsuit, gloves, booties.

For example, the calculator says: As a novice use 32 pounds. As an expert use 24 pounds.

I weigh 164lbs. I currently dive with 15.5 pounds and an AL80. If I have a steel tank, I am diving with 9lbs. Granted, everyone’s body composition is different and you must take into the consideration of the different buoyancy characteristics of the cylinders usedand that is why I recommend doing a buoyancy check.

The dive calculator on this website is WAY off and possibly even dangerous to follow. My recommendation: Do a proper buoyancy check at 500 psi.

Can I ask what data you entered and what weight do you normally use? I suppose you used the Experience drop down to choose the option best suited for you? I had many people review the calculator and over 90% agree it was very accurate. Of course, it’s not a precise measurement as everyone is different...therefore, I also suggest a buoyancy/weight check.

Never mind, I see your next comment. You must be pretty lean (ie: little to no fat). What exposure suit did you choose?
